I know what you are thinking… “there is no way for you to publish a book for free. This guy is trying to trick me into buying something because everyone knows you can’t get something for nothing.” Not true! You can publish your book for free, and I am going to tell you how.
Are you one of those people who like free?
Yes, believe it or not, there are several sites that allow you to publish your book for free, and it will be done at your pace. There are so many advantages to this process. First, you are the boss. Nothing will be done unless you want it to be done. Nobody will try to pressure you, or force you to do anything you don’t want to do. If you need more time, you take more time! Second, you’re pay nothing, unless you want too. I have published nine books for free, and I mean for free. Do you know how much all nine of them cost me? NOTHING!
The first thing you need to do is write your book. If you need some tips on that, you can check out one of our archived articles “Getting off the porch.” There is really no reason to start the publishing process until your book is finished. Once your book is finished, then you go to the Createspace website and open a free account.
Createspace is a free publishing website that is very user-friendly. Once you start your free account, be sure to read all the help pages. One of the first mistakes I made was not downloading the proper format file, and whet it was time to proofread my book, all the pages were out of whack. Once again, you need to follow the directions closely, so you end up with a product you can be proud of.
Here is a couple tips to keep in mind… your book needs to look like a book. In other words, keep your chapters relatively the same length. Don’t forget to number your pages (this can be somewhat challenging). It’s all a learning process, and once you go through it once, you will be an expert.
Once you take a look around the CreateSpace site, you will see that they have a pretty cool digital proofreader. This works well but I recommend you order a copy of your book so you can see exactly what your customers will be getting. I wasn’t sure how my original cover would look, so I ordered a copy so I could have a look for myself. When I received a few days later, I saw that the cover was the wrong finish, and was not what I wanted my readers to see. After a couple tweaks and changes, my cover was perfect!
Another good thing about Createspace is the expert advice that is available within the site. At every step, there is a place where you can ask for guidance with your project. They also have experts on staff around the clock, in case you have a problem.
Get the proper book writing software.
Let’s face it… in today’s technological world, you need the proper equipment to write your book. If you are on a budget, don’t worry. There are many affordable computers on the market today. If you are looking for an inexpensive computer, check out our recent review on low priced word processing computers. Another thing you may want to pick up is an eReader. When you publish your book for free, one of the options is selling it electronically. To make sure all of your books come out the right way, you will need to download them and read them. Before you purchase an eReader from anywhere, take a look at the comparison we did on Kindle eReaders.
No matter how you chose to write your book, sooner or later you will have to make an electronic copy. I recommend you write your book on a computer that has the proper book writing software installed on it. I use Microsoft Office for a couple of reasons. The first reason is that MS Word has all the tools you need for sizing, formatting, and layout of your manuscript. Secondly, It also has MS PowerPoint, which is what I use to uniquely design my covers. The program you use needs to be user-friendly and easy to navigate. Easy to use book writing software will make writing so much easier!
Using the right channel distribution.
Once your book has been published, you will have to make several decisions on what channels to use and how to distribute your book. There are many options in channel distribution, so you will need to do your homework. You will have to decide on where it will be sold, and how much you will charge. It’s all fine and good to charge a million dollars a book, but if nobody buys it, you may want to reconsider. At any rate, you can always change your mind later. If you want an idea of how much to charge, you can look at my books, all published on CreateSpace, and see how they are doing at Amazon…
Now, sit back and watch your book work…
So, there you have it. I hope you have been clicking the links and seeing how everything works. If you chose online channel distribution, you will soon be able to see your book advertised at Barnes and Nobel, Books a Million, and Amazon Books. I even found my books on German and Chinese websites! It’s pretty amazing how it all works, and you did it for nothing! Nice work. Now, if you found this article useful, please drop down and let me know. Then tell a friend, and remember, just a short time ago, you didn’t think you would ever get that book written. Nice work!
Now, order a few copies, autograph them and pass them to your friends… You are an Author!
