So, how long has it been since you first started thinking about writing a book? You obviously have good ideas, and you secretly believe that you would be a good author. But, that’s just something you like to think about when you daydream. There is no way that you could actually write and publish a book…
Me, an author? – say it ain’t so!
YES! You can be an author, and guess what? It’s not that hard to do. You already have the main thing you need to become successful… the ambition. The rest is just details.
Authors have a way of seeing things in their mind that most others do not. You can imagine your character as they are, as they will be tomorrow, and how they will be across the course of their imaginary lives. For someone to see something in so many layers is special, and it’s probably why you are thinking about writing a book. Good for you!
All you need are the basics… a place that is all your own, where you can sit in peace and think. Perhaps by a window in a place far from the TV. The only other thing you might need is a dedicated computer, one that is always available to you. If you don’t have one, there are some really nice word processing computers for a lot less that you would imagine. If you need one, here is a recent article I wrote comparing some of the cheaper computers available: Best laptop deals when you are on a budget.
Book publishing costs too much!
Publishing a book can be very expensive, it’s true. But there are publishers out there who will publish your book for free. Here is how it works… first, you write your book. If you need help with that, here is an article that will help you feel better about starting you book: How to start my book.
Once your book is written, you can go to one of the free publishing sites, like the one I often use, CreateSpace. Once you open your free account there, you can download your manuscript, design your cover, and decide on your sales plan. The reason it is free is because no books are printed until they are sold. Let’s say you want to buy one of my published books, My Navy, the voyage of a submarine cook.
If you click on the link, you will see that it is for sale on the Amazon site throughout the world. If you were to select and purchase it, CreateSpace will then print the book, and ship it to you. The customer pays for the printing, shipping and all costs related to your book.
It is a very affordable, very cool process.
When I finally wrote my first book, I had a two-year-old son, and two recently adopted boys from Ukraine. Two two-year old’s and a socially challenged eight-year old. I was a stay-at-home dad who never had a minute to himself. I get it. So, you know what I did? I carried a cell phone recorder in my pocket and recorded ideas all day long. With my family circus in tow, I came up with so many ideas! When they interacted in the store, I had an idea. When they cried and fought, I had an idea. When they said their prayers, I had an idea. Then, every night, when the circus closed and the bums were in bed, I made myself a drink and started transposing my notes onto my computer. It wasn’t the easiest way to write, but it worked. Actually, my boys gave me the idea for my second book, My Buddies, cuddles and chaos.
The point of my story is that YOU CAN do it! No matter what your fears are, no matter how unsupporting your spouse is, you can write a book. If you still have some questions about it, scroll down to the bottom of this page and ask me. I am here for you, and I can help you. If I can do this, than anyone can do this.
But what about…
Enough! You can do this! The beauty of all of this is you can write and publish your book all by yourself. Honestly, there has never been a time in history when it was this easy to write and publish your book. Think about how awesome it will be when your grandchildren reach up on that bookshelf and pick out the book that YOU wrote! How cool is that?
Oh, one thing I really need to stress… save your work. One evening I was sitting in my personal writing area typing away, and of course, I was way too busy to save my work. When I got up to get my son David a drink of water, he smacked his opened hands down on my keyboard and erased everything I had written for the PAST THREE HOURS!!! Please be smarter that I was… save your work often and on a thumb drive, just in case Alexander knocks your wine glass onto the keyboard!!! (sigh). Yes, I learned the hard way.
Today is a day like no other…
OK, then it’s settled. Start writing down thoughts, and remember, they don’t have to be in any order! I usually figure out the ending to my book long before I know how they will get there. It’s a process, and you will be wonderful at it! As a matter of fact, if any of you readers
publish a free book after reading this article, leave me the information and I will purchase a copy from Amazon! Please, once again, feel free to ask me any questions on the form below. I will respond to your question and help you to take those first steps. Now, go write your book!
